Cruise Types

Buoy

  • Coverage: Cruises serviced 5 stations, lined along the central "axis" of the lake (from the islands to the deep hole in the east basin)
  • Deployment, servicing, and retrieval of moorings (buoys, sediment traps, thermistors, transmissometers, current meters, acoustic doppler current profilers)
  • Type of sampling: service sediment traps, box cores, ponar grabs for macrobenthos; CTD and water sampling
  • Time on station: 2-12 hours
  • Vessel: RV Laurentian (one exception: the RV Lake Guardian was used in late August)
  • Frequency: Monthly, 3-5 days in duration, May through October

Transect

  • Coverage: Central basin only; 4 north-south transects and 3 west-east transects were sampled continuously during both day and night
  • Type of sampling: Underway towing of fish acoustics and plankton survey system (undulation fish with CTD, Par sensor, oxygen sensor, transmissometer and OPC); CTD casts and vertical zooplankton tows were made at 3-4 stations along each transect (both day and night); 1-2 mid-water and bottom trawls were made per transect (both day and night)
  • Time on station: less than 60 minutes
  • Vessel: RV Laurentian (one exception: the RV Lake Guardian was used in early August);
  • Frequency: Monthly, 5-7 days in duration during May through October

Fixed-Station

  • Coverage: All basins
  • Type of sampling: on-station sampling, with continuous collections of primary productivity (using Ferry-box sampling) and microbial communities (using flow cytometry); 48 stations were sampled, with 30 core stations sampled at a minimum (including the EPA dissolved oxygen stations); CTD casts made at each station; nutrient profiling done microbial communities sampled; toxins measured; occasional box coring, optical measurements
  • Time on station: ~2 hours per station
  • Vessel: RV Lake Guardian
  • Frequency: Monthly, 5-7 days in duration, May through September

Diel

  • Coverage: Central basin only (2-5 sites per cruise)
  • Type of sampling: Short (5 km) transect sampled every 4 hours for a 24 hour period; repeated at 1-3 sites in an area likely to become hypoxic (less than 4 mg/l) during summer and 1-2 sites in an area likely to remain well-oxygenated (more than 4 mg/l) during summer; underway sampling with fish acoustics and an undulating fish with CTD, OPC and Par sensor, oxygen sensor, transmissometer; mid-water and bottom trawling were conducted simultaneously with underway sampling; on-station vertical profiles of temperature, oxygen, chlorophyll, Par, zooplankton; macrobenthos also sampled
  • Time on station: 24 hours per station
  • Vessel: RV Lake Guardian (underway sampling) and RV Laurentian (trawling)
  • Frequency: Monthly, 4-8 days in duration during May through September

Harmful Algal Bloom (HABs)

  • Coverage: West basin only
  • Type of sampling: A variety of field sampling and experiments conducted; collections of water needed inside and outside of blooms
  • Time on station: Undecided
  • Vessel: RV Lake Guardian
  • Frequency: Single cruise August 27-31

Harmful Algal Blooms Tracking Cruise Leg (HABs Tracking)

  • Coverage: West basin only
  • Type of sampling: A variety of field sampling and experiments conducted; cruises will target large HABs; also will service buoys during non-outbreak times
  • Time on station: Undecided
  • Vessel: RV Laurentian
  • Frequency: Single cruise August 21-31

Dye-Tracking

  • Coverage: Central basin only
  • Type of sampling: Following distribution of SF6 released into central basin
  • Time on station: Constantly moving
  • Vessel: RV Laurentian
  • Frequency: Single cruise July 18-August 6
